Biography

Volodymyr Zelenskyy is recognized among Jewish contributors to Philosophy & Social Sciences — President of Ukraine since 2019; the comedian who stayed in Kyiv in February 2022 — 'I need ammunition, not a ride' — and became the wartime voice of his country.

How & why

Born in Kryvyi Rih into a Russian-speaking Jewish family — his grandfather fought in the Red Army while three of his great-uncles were murdered in the Holocaust — Volodymyr Zelenskyy took a law degree and became a comedian instead, playing a schoolteacher who accidentally becomes president. In 2019 the country elected him to the job for real, with 73% of the vote. When Russia invaded in February 2022 and Western capitals offered to evacuate him, his answer went around the world: 'I need ammunition, not a ride.' He stayed in Kyiv, and the nightly video address from a besieged capital became one of the defining political acts of the century so far.
