Jochelson was a pioneering ethnographer of the indigenous peoples of northeastern Siberia, whose fieldwork on the Yukaghir, Koryak and Aleut — much of it as part of the Jesup North Pacific Expedition — remains foundational. A former revolutionary exiled to Siberia, he turned exile into scholarship, later settling in the United States. He was born into a Jewish family in Vilnius.
