How & why

Seligman was a founding figure of British ethnology, conducting influential fieldwork on the peoples of Melanesia (the 1898 Torres Strait expedition) and of Sudan, and mentoring a generation of anthropologists including Malinowski. His The Melanesians of British New Guinea and Pagan Tribes of the Nilotic Sudan became standard references. He came from an English Jewish family.
