Shapiro was a physical anthropologist who chaired anthropology at the American Museum of Natural History and taught at Columbia, studying human physical variation, migration and mixture. His best-known work, The Heritage of the Bounty (1936), examined the Pitcairn Islanders descended from the Bounty mutineers, and he also studied the effects of migration on Japanese Americans. He was Jewish.
