Victor de Sabata was an Italian conductor and composer of partial Jewish descent through his mother, Rosita Tedeschi, and one of the twentieth century's greatest operatic conductors, celebrated for his Verdi, Puccini and Wagner. Succeeding Toscanini as principal conductor at La Scala in Milan, he left a legendary recording of Puccini's 'Tosca'. He was also a gifted composer of orchestral and stage works.
