How & why

Origins and early life

Sir Ellice Victor Sassoon, 3rd Baronet (1881-1961), was born at Naples into the Baghdadi Jewish Sassoon merchant and banking family, whose firm had come to specialise in shipping Indian cotton yarn and opium from Bombay to China.

Work and career

He served in the Royal Flying Corps in the First World War and was injured, and walked with two sticks for the rest of his life. He moved the family business to Shanghai and built there the Cathay Hotel on the Bund - today the Peace Hotel - along with much of the modern city, and he helped the European Jews who had fled to the Shanghai ghetto to survive; he left in 1941 under Japanese pressure. He was a keen photographer and opened the Hamilton Studios, first at Simla and then, from 1928, at Bombay, where the studio still stands in a building of his own; and he collected Chinese ivories, a vast collection bequeathed to the British Museum in 2018.

Later years

He spent his last years at Nassau in the Bahamas, where he married his American nurse, Evelyn Barnes, who carried on after his death the charity he had founded for Bahamian children.
