Origins and early life
Sir Ellis Kadoorie (1865-1922) belonged to a Baghdadi Jewish family established in Bombay since the eighteenth century.
Work and career
He reached Hong Kong in 1883 as an employee of David Sassoon & Sons, the Iraqi Jewish trading house, and with his brother Elly built a fortune in banking, rubber, electricity, docks and property. Much of it went to schools: the Sir Ellis Kadoorie School in Hong Kong, and the Shanghai school that became Yucai High School. His will left money to the British government for education, to be invested either in Palestine or in Iraq.
The Zionist Organization assumed it was meant for Hebrew education; a careful reading of the will showed it was not, and after a long dispute the funds were invested in Palestine and built two agricultural schools, both bearing his name. The one at Tulkarm opened in 1930 for the Arab population and is today the Palestine Technical University - Kadoorie; the one below Mount Tabor opened in 1933 for the Jewish population, and Yitzhak Rabin, Yigal Allon and the poet Haim Gouri came out of it. He is buried in the Jewish cemetery of Hong Kong.
