Vera Rubin

Rubin was an astronomer whose meticulous measurements of the rotation of galaxies revealed that stars at their edges move far faster than visible matter can explain, providing the strongest early evidence for dark matter. Working through decades of gender barriers, she transformed cosmology and mentored generations of women in science. She was Jewish, the daughter of a Jewish immigrant family.
