Origins and early life
Vaiben Louis Solomon was born at Adelaide on 13 May 1853 to Judah Moss Solomon and Rachel née Cohen, an observant Jewish family; his father was a merchant, a member of the South Australian parliament and mayor of Adelaide, and the son remained a Jew all his life.
Work and career
He went north to the Northern Territory in 1873 in the gold rush at Pine Creek, and stayed to found and edit the Northern Territory Times and Gazette at Palmerston, now Darwin, from which he campaigned for the Territory's development and for the interests of its settlers. Elected to the South Australian House of Assembly in 1890 for the Northern Territory, he sat until 1901, and on 1 December 1899 he became Premier of South Australia, the only Jew ever to lead a colonial or state government in Australia; his ministry lasted seven days, the shortest premiership in the colony's history, and this fiche states that as plainly as the rest.
Recognition
He was a delegate to the federal conventions that drafted the Australian constitution, argued for the inclusion of the Northern Territory in the federation, and in 1901 was elected to the first federal parliament as one of its four Jewish members.
Later years
He served the Adelaide Hebrew Congregation and Jewish charities and campaigned for the Northern Territory's transfer to the Commonwealth, achieved after his death. He died at Adelaide on 20 October 1908.
