Tadeusz Reichstein is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Achieved the first chemical synthesis of vitamin C (1933) and isolated cortisone/adrenal steroids, sharing the 1950 Nobel Prize.

How & why

Tadeusz Reichstein was a Polish-Swiss chemist, born into a Jewish family in Wloclawek, Poland. In 1933 he achieved one of the first chemical syntheses of vitamin C, making the vitamin cheaply available worldwide, and he later isolated and studied cortisone and other adrenal steroids. For this work on the hormones of the adrenal cortex he shared the 1950 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
