Biography

Stuart Freedman is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Physicist; early experimental test of Bell's inequalities

How & why

Freedman, with John Clauser at UC Berkeley, carried out in 1972 the first experimental test of Bell's inequality, showing that quantum mechanics was confirmed and local hidden-variable theories ruled out — work later recognized by the 2022 Nobel Prize awarded to Clauser and others. He also made major contributions to weak-interaction and nuclear physics. He is included in listings of Jewish physicists (Jinfo.org); his religious background is not detailed in standard biographies.
