Sarnoff, from a Jewish family, was a physician and cardiovascular physiologist who directed heart research at the National Heart Institute. Holder of some sixty patents, he invented the spring-loaded auto-injector, a device that lets a person rapidly self-administer a life-saving drug — the basis of the AtroPen, LidoPen and EpiPen used in emergencies worldwide. He also founded a foundation supporting young cardiovascular researchers.
