Born to a Jewish family in Albany, Langer trained as a chemical engineer and, working early with cancer researcher Judah Folkman, defied skeptics to show that large molecules could be released slowly and controllably from polymers. At MIT he became a founder of controlled drug delivery and tissue engineering, work that underlies modern sustained-release medicines and the lipid nanoparticles used in mRNA vaccines. One of the most cited engineers in history, he holds more than a thousand patents.
