How & why

Stanley Kunitz was an American poet who twice served as U.S. Poet Laureate and won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1959 for his 'Selected Poems 1928-1958'. Born in Worcester, Massachusetts, to Russian-Jewish immigrant parents, he wrote spare, deeply felt lyric poetry over a career spanning eight decades and mentored generations of younger poets. His Jewish immigrant upbringing is a documented part of his life and shaped several of his poems.
