Oppen was an American poet and a founder of the Objectivist movement, whose spare, precise verse earned him the 1969 Pulitzer Prize for Poetry for Of Being Numerous. He abandoned poetry for decades of political activism during the Depression and later fled McCarthy-era persecution to Mexico before resuming writing. He was born George Oppenheimer into a Jewish family in New Rochelle, New York.
