Lisel Mueller is recognized among Jewish contributors to Arts & Literature — Pulitzer Prize for Poetry
Mueller won the 1997 Pulitzer Prize for Poetry for 'Alive Together' and remains the only German-born poet to receive it; her luminous, plainspoken poems drew on memory, loss and immigration. Born Elisabeth Neumann in Hamburg, she came to the United States in 1939 after her father, an outspoken anti-Nazi teacher, was forced from his post. Jinfo.org records her father as Jewish.
