How & why

Fischer is an economist and central banker who was a leading figure in modern macroeconomics, first vice-chair of the IMF, governor of the Bank of Israel (2005–2013), and vice-chair of the U.S. Federal Reserve. As an MIT professor his textbooks and doctoral students shaped a generation of economic policymakers. He was born to a Jewish family in Zambia and is Jewish, holding Israeli and American citizenship.
