Biography

Stanley Cohen was an American-Jewish biochemist who co-developed recombinant DNA technology.

How & why

Cohen isolated and characterized epidermal growth factor and nerve growth factor, revealing the protein signals that tell cells to grow and differentiate and opening entire fields of cancer and developmental biology. He shared the 1986 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Rita Levi-Montalcini. He was born in Brooklyn to Jewish immigrants from Russia.
