Biography

Michael N. Hall is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Discovered the TOR pathway governing cell growth; Grande Médaille (2023); Jewish mother

How & why

Hall, an American–Swiss molecular biologist of partial Jewish background (Jewish mother, per Jewish biographical sources), discovered the protein TOR (target of rapamycin) at the Biozentrum in Basel in the early 1990s. TOR turned out to be the central controller of cell growth in response to nutrients, a pathway now central to cancer, diabetes and ageing research. He received the Grande Médaille of the French Academy of Sciences in 2023.
