A self-taught pioneer, he invented the nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) battery that powered a generation of hybrid vehicles and portable electronics, and he pioneered amorphous-silicon and thin-film devices used in solar panels and rewritable optical media. His work founded the field of 'ovonics' and advanced clean energy technology.
