How & why

Tax was a Jewish American cultural anthropologist who developed 'action anthropology', in which researchers help the communities they study, notably through the Fox Project among the Meskwaki. His 'Penny Capitalism' (1953) analysed the market economy of a Guatemalan Indian community, and he founded the journal 'Current Anthropology'. Born in Chicago and raised in Milwaukee, he taught for decades at the University of Chicago.
