Austrian neurologist and the founder of psychoanalysis, a clinical method for treating psychopathology through dialogue between a patient and a psychoanalyst.
Freud founded psychoanalysis, a theory and clinical method that reshaped how the world understands the unconscious mind, dreams, sexuality and childhood development. His concepts — repression, the unconscious, transference — permeated psychiatry, the humanities and popular culture. He was born into an Austrian Jewish family in Moravia and remained a self-described Jew throughout his life, fleeing Vienna for London in 1938 after the Nazi annexation of Austria.
