Origins and early life
Sidney Sonnino was born on 11 March 1847 in Pisa. His father, Isacco Saul Sonnino, came from the Jewish community of Livorno and converted to Anglicanism; his mother was a Welsh Protestant, and Sidney was raised in his father's adopted Anglican faith — this fiche says so plainly, and he figures in this directory by his documented Jewish father.
Work and career
A rigorous student of the Italian countryside and its miseries, he entered parliament in 1880 and twice restored the nation's finances as minister. He was twice Prime Minister of Italy, in 1906 and in 1909-10. As foreign minister from 1914 through the World War, he negotiated the Treaty of London of 1915 that brought Italy into the war beside the Entente, and in 1919 he led the Italian delegation at the Paris Peace Conference alongside Orlando.
A famously austere and bookish statesman, he retired to his tower on the Tuscan coast and died in Rome on 24 November 1922.
