Origins and early life
Alonso de Burgos was born around 1415, probably in Burgos, 'of a judeoconverso family' — the words are those of the Royal Academy of History's biographical dictionary, which states it without ambiguity.
Work and career
One honest note belongs here. The sources name the family's origin but not an individual Jewish ancestor or the generation of the conversion, and this fiche says so. A Dominican friar, he became confessor to Isabella of Castile and one of the churchmen closest to the Catholic Monarchs, bishop of Córdoba, then of Cuenca, then of Palencia, and their chapel's master in the years the Spanish monarchy took shape. His lasting work is in stone: in 1488 he founded the Colegio de San Gregorio in Valladolid, the Dominican college whose façade and courtyard are among the supreme achievements of late Gothic art in Spain — still studied by art historians, and today the home of the National Museum of Sculpture. He died in Palencia in 1499 and was buried in his college.
