Biography

Seymour Benzer is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Molecular biologist who mapped the fine structure of the gene and pioneered the genetics of behavior using fruit flies.

How & why

Benzer, an American molecular biologist from a Jewish immigrant family in New York, mapped the fine structure of the gene by studying bacteriophage mutations, showing the gene was subdivisible and linear. He then pioneered the genetics of behavior using fruit flies, isolating the first mutants of circadian rhythm and learning. His work at Caltech founded modern neurogenetics.
