Scott Galloway is recognized among Jewish contributors to Economics & Business — NYU Stern marketing professor who founded Prophet, RedEnvelope and L2, and became after October 2023 one of the most prominent American voices against campus antisemitism.
Origins and early life
Scott Galloway was born in San Diego on 3 November 1964, the son of a Jewish mother who had emigrated from London and worked as a secretary and of a Scottish father who sold for a living, and he grew up in Los Angeles. He took his degree at UCLA in 1987 and an MBA at Berkeley in 1992, and founded the brand consultancy Prophet the same year.
Work and career
He started the gift retailer that became RedEnvelope in 1997 and took it public in 2003, and in 2010 he founded L2, which measured how well brands were doing online and which Gartner bought in 2017 for a hundred and fifty-five million dollars. He has taught marketing at the Stern School of New York University throughout, and became better known outside the lecture hall than in it: Pivot with Kara Swisher from 2018, The Prof G Show from 2020, and the books, among them The Four in 2017 and The Algebra of Wealth in 2024.
Before October 2023 he had, by his own account, given his Jewishness little thought and taken American antisemitism for something largely imagined. Afterwards he became one of the loudest voices against what was being said on American campuses, and put the charge as a double standard: that when it comes to expressions of hate against Jews, freedom of speech is absolute. The Algemeiner put him on its 2024 list of the hundred people doing most for Jewish life, and described him there as the son of a Jewish mother from England and a Scottish father, which is the sourced statement this card rests on.
