Burt Shavitz is recognized among Jewish contributors to Economics & Business — Beekeeper who co-founded Burt's Bees; his beeswax, and then his face, became one of the best-known natural-care brands in the world.
Burt Shavitz was born Ingram Berg Shavitz to a Jewish family in New York City on 15 May 1935, and took the name Burt when he left high school in 1953. He photographed New York for Time and Life in the 1960s, then walked away from the city for Maine, where he kept bees and sold honey from the back of a truck. In the early 1980s Roxanne Quimby began making candles from his leftover beeswax; the two became partners and launched Burt's Bees in Dover-Foxcroft, Maine, in 1984.
He left the running of the company early, kept living in a converted turkey coop without running water, and remained the bearded face on every tin until his death in Bangor on 5 July 2015.
