Jules Stein is recognized among Jewish contributors to Economics & Business — Ophthalmologist who booked dance bands to pay for medical school and co-founded Music Corporation of America in 1924; MCA became the most powerful agency in Hollywood and later the owner of Universal.
Jules Caesar Stein was born in South Bend, Indiana, to Lithuanian Jewish immigrants — Louis Stein, who kept a dry goods store, and Rosa Cohen — one of six children. He qualified as an ophthalmologist and paid his way through medical school by booking dance bands, and in 1924 in Chicago he turned the sideline into the Music Corporation of America with William R. Goodheart Jr. MCA became the most powerful talent agency in America and eventually the owner of Universal Pictures.
Stein never left medicine behind: in 1960 he founded Research to Prevent Blindness, which has funded eye research ever since.
