Scott Aaronson works on computational complexity and the limits of quantum computers, co-founded the Complexity Zoo, wrote 'Quantum Computing Since Democritus' and has written the blog 'Shtetl-Optimized' since 2005. He holds the Schlumberger Centennial Chair in computer science at the University of Texas at Austin. He grew up, in his own words, in a middle-class Jewish American family, and named his blog for the shtetls his ancestors came from — some from Vitebsk, like Chagall.
