Samuel Orkin Freedman, a Canadian clinical immunologist born in Montreal and long associated with the city's Jewish General Hospital, co-discovered in 1965 with Phil Gold the carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA). CEA became the basis of a widely used blood test for monitoring colorectal and other cancers. Freedman later served as dean of medicine and a senior academic administrator at McGill.
