Ruth Benesch was an American biochemist who, in a decades-long collaboration with her husband Reinhold Benesch at Columbia University, discovered in 1967 that 2,3-bisphosphoglycerate regulates how hemoglobin releases oxygen to the body's tissues, a landmark in understanding oxygen transport in the blood. Born to a Jewish family, she escaped Nazi Germany as a child on the Kindertransport, fleeing from Berlin to England in 1939.
