Nahum Sonenberg is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Biochemist who elucidated the control of protein synthesis (translation) initiation
Sonenberg elucidated how the initiation of protein synthesis (translation) is controlled: he discovered the cap-binding protein eIF4E and the mechanisms — including internal ribosome entry sites — that govern which messenger RNAs a cell translates, work central to cancer, memory and metabolism. He has led this field at McGill University since 1979. He was born in a displaced-persons camp in Wetzlar, Germany, to Jewish Holocaust survivors, grew up in Israel, and studied at the Weizmann Institute.
