Minkowski was a German-American astronomer who, with Walter Baade, classified supernovae into types I and II and identified the optical counterparts of powerful radio galaxies such as Cygnus A, foundational work in extragalactic astronomy. He emigrated to the United States after the Nazis dismissed him from Hamburg for being Jewish, and joined the Mount Wilson and Palomar observatories. He came from a distinguished Jewish family (nephew of mathematician Hermann Minkowski).
