Biography

Rudolph Lipschitz is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Analysis; Lipschitz continuity condition

How & why

Lipschitz was a German mathematician at Bonn who worked in analysis, differential geometry and number theory. He is best known for the Lipschitz continuity condition, a bound on how fast a function can change that underpins the existence and uniqueness theory of differential equations and much of modern analysis. He was born into a Jewish family in Königsberg.
