Pringsheim was a German mathematician noted for work on infinite series and continued fractions, and a prominent patron of Wagner's music. Born to a wealthy Jewish family in Silesia, he narrowly escaped Nazi Germany for Zurich in 1939; he was the father-in-law of writer Thomas Mann.
