Rudolf Vrba is recognized among Israeli contributors to Heroes of Israel — Escaped Auschwitz in April 1944 and co-wrote the Vrba-Wetzler report, the first detailed account of the camp to reach the free world.
Born Walter Rosenberg, Rudolf Vrba was nineteen when he and Alfréd Wetzler hid for three days under a woodpile inside Auschwitz and then walked to Slovakia. What they carried out was a thirty-two-page report: the layout of Birkenau, the gas chambers, the arrival of the transports, the numbers. The Vrba-Wetzler report reached Western governments and the press in June 1944, and its publication is credited with helping stop the deportation of some 200,000 Hungarian Jews when the regent Horthy halted the trains.
Vrba became a biochemist and taught pharmacology at the University of British Columbia; he spent his life insisting the world had been told in time.
