Roy Rappaport

Rappaport was a Jewish American ecological anthropologist whose 'Pigs for the Ancestors' (1968) showed how ritual among the Tsembaga Maring of New Guinea regulated ecology, becoming a founding text of ecological anthropology. His later 'Ritual and Religion in the Making of Humanity' (1999) offered a sweeping theory of ritual. He taught for decades at the University of Michigan and served as president of the American Anthropological Association.
