Roland Moreno

Moreno invented and patented the smart card (carte a puce) in 1974, the chip-and-memory technology now embedded in bank cards, SIM cards and ID documents worldwide. He was born in Cairo into a stateless Egyptian-Jewish family (originally named Bahbout) that later settled in France, where he became a self-taught inventor.
