How & why

Major Roi Klein, born in Ra'anana in 1975, was deputy commander of the 51st Battalion of the Golani Brigade. On 26 July 2006, during the battle for Bint Jbeil in southern Lebanon in the Second Lebanon War, a grenade was thrown among his soldiers and he threw himself onto it, absorbing the blast with his body. Witnesses recounted that he recited the Shema Yisrael prayer as he did so. He was thirty-one and left a wife and two young sons; he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Courage and is buried on Mount Herzl.
