Origins and early life
Roger Rees was born at Aberystwyth in Wales, the son of a shop assistant and a police officer, and grew up in Balham in London; he studied art at Camberwell and at the Slade School of Fine Art, and came to acting by accident, while painting scenery at the Wimbledon Theatre, when he was asked to fill a part.
Work and career
With the Royal Shakespeare Company he played Malcolm in Trevor Nunn's Macbeth and created the title role in David Edgar's stage adaptation of The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby, which brought him the Olivier Award in 1980, the Tony Award in 1982 and an Emmy nomination for the filmed version. He won Obie Awards for The End of the Day and for co-directing Peter and the Starcatcher, and was known on television as Robin Colcord in Cheers and Lord John Marbury in The West Wing, and on screen as the Sheriff of Rottingham in Mel Brooks's Robin Hood: Men in Tights.
Personal life
He lived in the United States for more than twenty-five years, became an American citizen in 1989 and converted to Judaism in the 1980s; in 2011 he married the playwright Rick Elice, his partner of thirty-three years and sometimes his co-author. He was inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame in November 2015, a few months after his death.
