Robert Remak is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Embryologist who established that cells arise by division and defined the three embryonic germ layers.
Robert Remak was an embryologist and physiologist who demonstrated that cells arise only by the division of existing cells, and who defined the three embryonic germ layers from which the body's tissues develop. He also did pioneering work on nerve fibres. He was Jewish and, refusing to convert, became one of the first unbaptised Jews to teach at a Prussian university.
