How & why

Alfred L. Goldberg was a Harvard cell biologist and biochemist who discovered central mechanisms by which cells break down proteins, and he named the proteasome, the ATP-dependent machine that degrades damaged or unneeded proteins. His work laid the groundwork for proteasome-inhibiting drugs used against cancers such as multiple myeloma. He was born into a Jewish family in Providence, Rhode Island.
