One of the most important composers of the American musical, Rodgers created enduring works with lyricists Lorenz Hart and then Oscar Hammerstein II, including 'Oklahoma!', 'Carousel', 'South Pacific' and 'The Sound of Music'. He won the Pulitzer Prize, Tony, Oscar, Grammy and Emmy awards. He was Jewish, born to a Jewish family in New York.
