Hammerstein was the lyricist and librettist whose partnership with Richard Rodgers produced 'Oklahoma!', 'Carousel', 'South Pacific' and 'The Sound of Music', integrating song and story to transform American musical theatre. He won two Pulitzer Prizes and multiple Oscars and Tonys. He was of Jewish paternal descent; his grandfather, impresario Oscar Hammerstein I, was a German-Jewish immigrant.
