Richard Leo Simon was born in New York City on 6 March 1899 to a wealthy Jewish family: his father Leo was a feather and silk manufacturer of German Jewish descent, his mother Anna a German Jewish immigrant. In 1924, with Max Schuster, he founded Simon & Schuster on borrowed money and one idea — his aunt had asked where she could buy a book of crossword puzzles, and there was none. Their first title sold hundreds of thousands and started a national craze. The house went on to publish Will Durant, Dale Carnegie and Ernest Hemingway, and with Robert de Graff created Pocket Books in 1939, which put paperbacks in drugstores and railway stations and made books an everyday purchase. He was the father of the singer Carly Simon.
