Gerald Ronson was born into a middle-class Jewish family in London in 1939 and left school at fourteen to join his father's furniture business. He built Heron International into a property and petrol-station group, and is credited with bringing the self-service petrol station to Britain. He founded and chairs the Community Security Trust, the body that protects British Jewish schools, synagogues and events and records antisemitic incidents nationally, and was knighted in 2024 for his charitable work.
