Gershon, from a Jewish family, was an immunologist and pathologist at Yale. In 1970, with his student Kondo, he demonstrated that thymus-derived (T) lymphocytes can actively suppress immune responses and named them suppressor T cells — a concept now understood as regulatory T cells and central to immune tolerance and autoimmunity research. He died of lung cancer at 50.
