How & why

Leonard Hayflick was an American microbiologist who discovered the 'Hayflick limit', the finding that normal human cells can divide only a finite number of times before senescence, overturning the belief that cultured cells were immortal and founding the modern biology of aging. He also developed the widely used WI-38 cell strain for vaccine production. He was born in Philadelphia to a Jewish family.
