Son of Russian-Jewish immigrants who prospered in pharmacies, Ralph Roberts sold his belt-and-suspenders business in 1963 and bought a 1,200-subscriber cable system in Tupelo, Mississippi. He named the company Comcast — communications plus broadcast — and grew it, deal by patient deal, into America's largest cable and broadband company, later home to NBCUniversal. His son Brian, who joined at the bottom, runs it still; the bow-tied founder stayed on the board into his nineties.
