Biography

Ralph Phillips is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Functional analysis; Lax-Phillips scattering theory

How & why

Phillips, an American Jewish mathematician, worked in functional analysis and, with Peter Lax, developed Lax-Phillips scattering theory, explaining mathematically how waves scatter off obstacles and linking the decay of energy to the analytic structure of the scattering process. He received the AMS Steele Prize for Lifetime Achievement in 1997.
